Rockburn 'Tigermoth' Riesling 2012

Grape Variety: 100% Riesling
Growing Region: Central Otago, New Zealand
Winemaker: Malcolm Rees-Francis
Rockburn like Central Otago is more than a one trick pony - with its varied vineyard sites, diurnal extremes and diverse soil types, they are producing dynamic, early drinking white wines that have been a great compliment with so many seafood dishes enjoyed this summer - and this Riesling is an exciting example.
In 2012 Cromwell experienced an honest growing season compared to many parts of the country - the vines enjoyed cool, but dry conditions producing some good yields off their vineyard blocks. The fruit was sourced for their Parkburn ‘Cromwell Basin’ vineyard, and harvested in late March.
The fruit was fermented in stainless steel tanks at 15°C to retain the fruits fresh aromatics and finesse.  The fermentation was stopped at the desired sugar and acid balance, crafting a wine with 11% alcohol and approximately 41 grams of residual sugar and good acidity - it was then racked, stabilized, filtered and bottled.
This medium-sweet Riesling with its cleansing acidity has been inspired by the Spätlese wines of Germany. In the glass this wine displays apricots and sweet mandarin aromas on the nose. The palate is packed with ripe and lively notes of tangerine and juicy limes. The wine is well balanced with a rich sweetness and fine acidity giving the wine a long and cleansing finish. This style of Riesling could easily be enjoyed in its youth - and those with patience will see the wine continue to evolve over time. Chill and serve at 7-8°C.
Drinking perfectly well this season; and over the coming 3-4 years.
Perfect wine as an aperitif, fresh shellfish dishes, Asian and vegetarian cuisine enjoy.
A ripe and lively Riesling with a lingering finish.
